Treatment of Aboriginal Australians over Time Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The position of Aboriginal Peoples in Australia has changed greatly since WWII from one of no recognition to one of equal representation in society. Until WWII there was little change. However since that time, the perceived worth of Aboriginal Australians has increased tremendously. Immediately following WWII, until 1946, Aborigines living like white people were offered citizenship and rights. Many referred to these as ‘dog licenses’ and declined. As for the general population, Aboriginal servicemen were given the vote in 1949 following armed service for Australia. This vote was not compulsory and few used the right. In 1960, the relatively new allowances for the elderly and disabled were made available to Aborigines, as was the non-compulsory vote in 1962. From 1963 to 1965, the case for equal pay for Aborigines was held, resulting in a positive verdict. However the implimentation of such a policy was delayed so much as to cause the Aborigines at Wave Hill to protest at the delay.
