An Analysis of Sophocles’ Antigone Thesis Statement: In Sophocles’ Antigone, three themes are important: the rule of divine law versus the laws of man, tyranny versus loyalty, and the persecution of women within the patriarchal society of Greco-Roman times as it applies to today. Within the realm of drama lies a diatribe on issues we find ourselves still battling today. Issues such as abiding by the laws of God over the fallible doctrine of man, as well as man’s interpretation of God’s will, dedication to the ruling class of one’s society versus loyalty to the ruler himself, and the role and persecution of women within society as a whole still plague us today as they did millennia ago. In theory, one could use Sophocles’ Antigone as a model of how little society has indeed changed throughout history, and how far we have fallen back into our basest and most primal of social conscience.
