The effect of osmosis on potato tissue: Planning
Plan: To investigate the effect of varying concentration of a sugar solution on the amount of osmotic activity between the solution and the potato tissue for example, a change in mass or volume.
Method: The variable I will change is the sugar concentration in the solution. The other variables I could control are the volume of solution, the temperature of the solution, the time the potato is in the solution for, and the mass/length of the potato. The dependable variable is he mass of the potato. I will dice potato cylinders into a size of approx 1cm long using a cork borer, and weigh them all before the experiment. I will then soak all of the cylinders for five minutes in distilled water, and roughly dry them off afterwards, then weigh each of them separately. Then, I will place 3 cylinders into test tubes labelled with their sugar concentration for a certain amount of time. After that time I will take them out, weigh them and records the results.
