"Those Winter Sundays" and "My Papa's Waltz" Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

What is love? Don't hurt me. Even after pain and suffering, a love between a father and son will usually survive. The poems "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden and "My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Roehtke are illustrations of two children who still love their fathers despite their actions toward them. "Those Winter Sundays" portrays a man looking back at the way his father showed him love. His father would get up early even on Sundays and warm up the house before anyone else had awoken (Hayden 105). He would “polish my shoes” as to make sure his son is dressed appropriately possibly to attend church. The son hints to abuse he may have endured from his father in "fearing the chronic angers of that house" (Hayden 105). This poem paints an image of a single parent struggling to know how to show his affection toward his son. "My Papa's Waltz" is about a man looking back in time at a specific childhood event and the relationship he had with his father. The scene of a boy dancing with his drunk father in the kitchen holding on “like death” displays the lengths a child will......
