American history textbooks, past and present, cannot print every significant, germane and/or, substantial event due to space limitations and, notwithstanding, writers perspective. Slavery was a major part in early America and it was not easy simply hiding something that existed in a significant portion of the nations history as well as the rest of the world. The problem did not just begin with the south relying heavily on slavery for their booming economy or their instant tradition of white dominance but with the North and South, other countries and especially Africa. The focus of culpability needs revivification of all those who partook of the grave indifference towards human life so that any decisions made are fully informed ones about the past and for future deterrence.
