Katherine Mansfield, “The Singing Lesson” 1 As Katherine Mansfield was born in 1888 her short stories can definitely be called modern. In the 19th century modern short stories emerged as their own genre and the demand for short fiction increased tremendously. Besides Edgar Allan Poe or Nathaniel Hawthorne, Katherine Mansfield was one of the most relevant authors of that time. One of her most important short stories was “The Singing Lesson” published in one of her short story collections. Before analyzing her work more detailed it is helpful to give a short explanation on the content. Regarding the content and the length of this short story it is an extremely typical example for a short story. It can be defined as a brief fictional prose that deals with only a few characters - in this case we have only Miss Meadows as a main character - and the entire action is limited to only a few significant scenes.
