Origins and Conflicts Contributing to the Second World War Between the years of 1939 and 1945, most of the world was engulfed in what would be the largest and deadliest war in history. World War II was a global military conflict which was fought between The Allies and aggressor nations of the Axis Powers. Millions of people died as a result of the Second World War; many were innocent victims of genocide, torture and civilian massacres. The verdict of World War I left many underlying factors which lead to the initiation of the Second World War. The terms that the Treaty of Versailles instated, are cited to be one of the single most indirect causes of World War II. The economic depression that followed left German citizens vulnerable and resentful. The militarization of Germany, along with Hitler’s desire for his expansive German empire, lead to the reoccupation of the Rhineland, the annexation of Austria, the dismemberment and occupation of Czechoslovakia and the eventual invasion of Poland.
