Who is to blame for the horror in the play, Macbeth? Throughout his play of ‘Macbeth’, William Shakespeare uses various mechanisms involving the settings, themes and characters to establish a great sense of horror for his audience. This horror is associated with the deceitful and bloody murders and battles, which take place in the play. Involving connotations associated with evil, the play produces a sense of darkness, destruction and deceit, which is ideal for terrifying acts and behavior to occur accumulatively and simultaneously. The initial opening scene begins with the deceitful witches who assist in revealing the inner destructive ambition that the seemingly loyal, courageous and noble Macbeth possesses. Immediately following this scene is one that involves soldiers who have just returned from a bloody victorious battlefield. The play tells the story of Macbeth’s decent into horror with the assistance of his manipulative and initially of greater ambition his wife, Lady Macbeth.
