Tragedy Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Hippolytus by Euripedes is an effective play in denoting who shoulders the responsibility of tragedy and drastic outcomes. This philosophical play opens with goddess Aphrodite vehemently displaying her hatred for Hippolytus going as far as to curse him. This factor brings about the idea of man, being unable to foresee into his future, ends up committing mistakes, due to not knowing. It also enables the readers to perceive a Greek point of view, where gods hold all responsibility for the fates of men. In Hippolytuss case this is evident, because he is cursed from the opening of the play. Phaedra, is used as a tool to lead to his destruction and gains ample sympathy fom the audience mainly because this love for her step son causes her anguish and makes her hate her own personality. However, she is not reluctant in blaming the gods for her desires which once again brings the readers to the point of questioning weather man controls his own destiny and makes choices willingly, or is some gods puppet, ending up in situations and fates that he has no control or ambition over.
