Myth and Modernity in the Novels of R. K Narayan The study of myth began with the publication of Frazer’s The Golden Baough. Ernst Cassirer in his Philosophy of Symbolic Forms (1923-29) writes that the symbols are shaped by man’s needs and purposes. In the symbol there is a thorough going identification between image and object, between the name and thing. He calls man a ‘symbol-making animal’. Myth is a form of thought i.e. a symbolic form. It is primal emotion, unmediated language of experience. The mythic image does not represent the thing, it is the thing itself. In ‘Language and Myth’ Cassirer clarifies art constitutes one of the perspectives by which to view reality. Art is no mere entertainment, [. . .] It is a revelation of a genuine aspect of our life 1.
