In this, his first book, Phillip Gwynne has made a wonderful contribution to the processes of reconciliation and healing that the people of our country are so desperately seeking. He had me from page one. The style of Gwynne's writing is disarming and amusing. The story is set in country South Australia, and before I knew it he had me hooked on the characters, who are so believable they are almost certainly based on real life characters and experiences. The story revolves around two boys in their mid-teens who become mates on the footy field. It describes life in a country town and the gradual awakening in young Blacky (a white-fella) of the realities of racism. Blacky is confronted with the fact that all is not well and racism is not okay, because now it involves his mate, his friend. The pressures, both ......
