The question of Lycurgus Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

According to Plutarch and a variety of other ancient sources, the Spartan system was the work of a lawgiver named Lycurgus. We have little information about him. Some people argue that he was not a real person. Plutarch states that it was in fact the actions of two people and questioned as to whether “he was God or man”, and admits that there are different accounts of his birth, travels, death and work as a lawmaker and statesman. Every book on Sparta acknowledges that we really don’t know anything about him, but goes on to speak about ‘Lycurgus’ as though he were a real person. The Spartans themselves worshipped him as a God. However, the archaeological record simply does not support any definite break at any period, as suggested by the Lycurgan myth. ‘Lycurgus’ himself, if he existed, is not very important. But the fact that a legendary figure is so central to Spartan thinking tells us something about the Spartans, ho they viewed the world and how others saw them.
