Immoral Characters in Heningway's 'The Sun Also Rises' Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Earnest Hemingway’s novel The Sun Also Rises is a novel about immoral characters. The characters drink all the time, sleep around, and basically have no moral values what-so-ever. People who read this novel could very well wonder how one could pick a hero out of this collection of vagrants. However, every novel has a hero and Hemingway’s heroes are in a class all by themselves. Most argue that the hero of The Sun Also Rises is Jake Barnes, he may drink, but maybe not as much as the other characters, and he certainly doesn’t sleep around. After careful consideration, I believe that Pedro Romero possesses much better qualities than Jake Barnes, and is the true hero of the novel. Ernest Hemingway often puts his characters into bad situations where their character is put through some sort of test, which tests this characters ability to keep going after a downfall. If the character makes it through this test, he is Hemingway’s hero. David Schelle says Hemingway’s Heroes must “take chances” and “not cry, but hold everything in”.
