It is absolutely normal for humans to develop attachments to the people in their lives and feel anxious when they are gone. Separation anxiety disorder can strike people of all ages. Although this disorder is most common in young children, it also occurs to teens, adults and even animals. This disorder is defined as a psychological condition in which an individual has excessive anxiety regarding separation from home, or from those with whom the individual has a strong attachment (Separation, par.1).
Children and adolescents may suffer with separation anxiety when dealing with a scare in their life or a serious separation. Other causes of this disorder can occur when the child feels a lot of stress, a significant change in the family or an illness. Another possibility may be that the disorder runs in the family. In the mean time, adults may also suffer with separation anxiety when dealing with a marital separation, a death, a child separation such as a leave for university or maybe even because their child becomes more socialized and less dependant on them.
