Jasmine v. One out of Many Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Jasmine and “One out of Many” Bharati Mukherjee’s novel Jasmine relies on narratives of Americanization associated with western locales and mobility. Mukherjee explores the promise of American-style individualism and female liberation alongside the burden of old world responsibilities and cultural ties signaling female oppression. V.S. Naipaul’s “One out of Many” deals with the struggles faced by an average Indian male immigrant, Santosh. Both Jasmine and Santosh have different reasons for coming to America and both characters will face obstacles that ultimately change the reason for their initial journey into the west. For Jasmine and Santosh, becoming one with their adopted country has a price. The “Gold Rush” mentality adopted by Jasmine makes her feel that she is able to profit from the uncharted country of America; the “land of opportunity.” Older Americans, however, see her as an exotic newcomer who disturbs the moral equilibrium of a fragile frontier society.
