DEFORESTATION
What is Deforestation?
Deforestation is when indigenous forests and woodland is destructed permanently. The term does not include removal of industrial forests such as plantations of Gums or Pines. All this destruction has caused the reduction of indigenous forests to 4/5 of their pre-agricultural area. Today indigenous forests cover around 21% of the earths land surface.
How does it happen?
Deforestation has happened by the following:
Conversion of forests to agricultural land to feed growing numbers of people.
People destroy forestland for the development of cash crops and cattle ranching, which both earn money in tropical countries.
Commercial logging (which supplies the world market with types of wood like; Teak, Mahogany and Ebony) destroys trees as well as opening up forests for agriculture.
Cutting trees for fire wood and building material.
To make the problem worse, the bad quality soils in the humid tropics do not support agriculture for very long. As a result people are often forced to move on and clear more forest area to m......
