Themes in the Great Gatsby Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Lesson 10 –Themes in Great Gatsby What is the Great Gatsby really about? I believe it is about ‘dreams’. The theme of dreams also includes that of the American Dream. In addition, two other themes that are explored in this novel are time and honesty. These themes, while they are significant to the plot of this novel, do not shape the characters or actions as much as the theme of dreams. Everyone dreams in this novel. At the beginning of the book, Nick associates Gatsby’s dream with ‘promises of life’. Gatsby dreams because he is so alive to life. His dreams come not from sleep but from a type of over-awakeness. Fitzgerald talks about when Gatsby was a boy he dreamt before he fell asleep. “The most grotesque and fantastic conceits…some vivid scene with an oblivious embrace”. We are introduced to how Daisy is part of Gatsby’s dream but actually falls short of his expectations. Nick mentions that when Daisy comes to Gatsby’s house for the first time it seemed like her actual physical appearance did not match his ‘dream’. Nick notes; “He had been full of the ide......
