The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn- Long Essay Jim, the African American exponent of the controversial novel, Huckleberry Finn represents the negro society and adversity faced by these slaves which were treated sub-humanly during the 19th century era. Written by Mark Twain, (Samuel L. Clemens) Jim’s personal traits and characteristics created by Twain allows the viewer to sympathize with Twain’s character, therefore raising awareness to society and also disseminating Twain’s views, “sympathy and interest in the masses of the negro people” Ralph Ellison. It is clear on Twain’s views of slavery and the treatment from the outset of this novel. His portrayal of black and white characters in the book exemplify his intentions of an adverse comment on the beliefs of racial norm. Twains’ upbringing was a key aspect in helping him understand the typical lifestyle of whites and African Americans and how they relate to each other.
