In Maya Angelous Working for the Dream, pride can be a strength and
a weakness. I believe that pride of M. Angelou is a negative.
Pride is a proper sense of what is fitting for ones position or character, or
self-respect ( Gorton, Carruth. Oxford American Dictionary. New York : Avon Books,
1980 ).
From Maya Angelous autobiography, she tells her story as a young black
woman living in America where she starts her difficult route as a single mother. Hawing
to take care of a child and herself put her in a situation where M. Angelou had to work
two jobs. In addition, she usually spent her two hours break between jobs at the
Melrose Record shop, partly owned by Louise Cox, a white woman. There, M. Angelou
liked to listen to records. One day, Louise Cox met her in the music store where she
proposed to M. Angelou to hear for new songs that she kept for Maya. As a result,
Maya could not to buy new records because she earned little money from her two
jobs......
