The crises faced by the Bolsheviks in the period 1917 to 1924 forced them to be ruthless and blind to human suffering. The charisma Lenin used in seizing power was replaced by terror in the suppression of political, military and economic threats. By the time of his death, the Bolsheviks had control of the entire country and Stalins reign, beginning in 1932, faced little opposition.
Lenin, in consolidating his power, used cruel and ruthless methods to deal with the political threats to his Party. After the November 1917 elections to the Constituent Assembly, it was clear to Lenin that the Bolsheviks were facing a crisis. Barely winning a quarter of the seats, Lenins initial support of the Constituent Assembly ceased to exist. He realised that his party could not govern properly beside an assembly whose majority were non-Bolsheviks. For this reason, the Constituent Assembly was dissolved by the Bolsheviks in January 1918 with the threat of violence.
