All Oedipus’ adult actions have been determined by the various prophecies given to him. Confronted by the oracle at Pytho, Apollo’s shrine, with his hideous destiny to marry his mother and kill his father, he leaves Corinth. Years later, when the city of Thebes is in the grip of a terrible plague, he is told by Creon that Apollo’s priest at Delphi says he must find the murderer of the previous King and cast him out. It will be this investigation that will lead to his learning of the truth of his origins and the crimes against human nature he has unwittingly committed. What engages the audience’s pity for him is that he always acted with the best of intentions, yet none of that mattered against the will of the gods determined to destroy the House of Labdacus – Laius, Jocasta and finally, Oedipus. The fact that Sophocles play ‘King Oedipus’ never refers to Laius’ previous offence, makes Oedipus’ suffering that much more terrible, since it appears to be without motive.
