William Shakespeare from the 16th century and Geoff Goodfellow from the 21st century are very different writers. Or are they? Discussing the Shakespeare sonnet CXVI and the Goodfellow poem Reminders, it may be seen that although from very different times these two poets may have many things in common with their writing. The 16th century had many set views on love. The 21st century also carries some set beliefs within it. The two poems have fixed structures, certain themes, intended audiences, particular meanings and an interesting use of language. This is what has been discussed while comparing Shakespeare to Goodfellow. The theme of both poets within these two poems is love. In Shakespeare, unaltered love and equality is the main emphasis of the poem and that everyone has the opportunity to love. ‘If this be error and upon me proved, I never writ, nor no man ever loved.’ This is the line that shows the audience that what he is saying ‘must’ be the truth for he has written.
