Greece was renowned not only for its beliefs and values but also for what we call the Arts. One of the many innovative art forms that have originated from Greece is its theatre. Greek theatre has had a beneficial influence on Shakespearean theatre. There have been many Greek plays and playwrights. Most of which has been lost in time. Greek theatre is divided into two main types: Tragedies and Comedies.
Tragedies are mainly plots that involve dramatic irony (situations where the audience realises the facts before the actors) in a disastrous story of deserved or undeserved catastrophe, bloody revenge or agonising problems of consciousness with remarkable coincidences. This mainly involves a hero of high birth whose hubris slowly brings him down until he crashes and burns. Watching a tragedy would put you in a state of fear and pity which is said to have a cleansing affect (katharsis).
