The First and Second world wars both broke out for various reasons and can be seen as similar in some areas, but different in others. It is suggested that the main cause of World War 1 was nationalism. However, some historians have argued that it was Germanys sudden expansion into Europe that caused the other countries to panic, and feel the need to develop the best armed forces. In addition to this, small nations such as the Serbs wanted their own country which was free from the intervention of the Austro Hungarian government. As a result of this, strong nationalistic groups were formed. An example being, the notorious Serbian Black Hand.
The German desire for ultimate power in Europe left many of the other European countries feeling threatened. This resulted in the formation of the alliance system; an agreement set up between two or more countries, stating that if one of the countries was attacked, help would be given by the other(s).
