By Thanit Maleekaew Introduction At first glance, robots in the imagination of humankind look like robots called androids shown in many movies such as C3PO in Star War, Terminator, or I, Robot. However, the development in robot technology nowadays is far from the movies. Robots were developed after World War II, when pressure was put on engineers to design robot arms used in production of nuclear weapons and nuclear energy (Murphy, 2002:21). Murphy (2002) classifies robot technology into two types: industrial manipulators and automated guided vehicles (AGVs). A description of a robot called an industrial manipulator, defined by The Robotics Institute of America (RIA), is a re programmable, and multi functional manipulator (or device) designed to move material, parts, tools, or specialized devices through variable programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks (Nehmzow, 1999: 8).
