AP Enzyme Lab Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Affect of Enzyme Catalase on the Rate of Decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide An experiment was conducted in order to identify the effect of enzymes on the rate of a reaction. The experiment was divided into two sections. In one part, the rate of decomposition of H2O2 under normal environmental conditions was measured. In the other part the rate of decomposition of H2O2 in presence of enzyme catalase was measured. In the first part, 15mL of 1.5% H2O2 was kept in a plastic cup overnight. The next day the amount of H2O2 present was measured through titration. The amount of H2O2 which decomposed was found to be 0.1mL. In the second part of the experiment, 15mL of 1.5% H2O2 was kept in four plastic cups for 10s, 30s, 60s, 120s and 180s respectively. Then the amount of H2O2 which was decomposed was found to be 0.6mL in 10s, 1.1mL in 30s, 1.5mL in 60s, 1.7mL in 120s and 1.8mL in 180s. The data clearly shows that the amount of H2O2 decomposed was higher in the catalyzed solution than in the un-catalyzed solution. This is because enzymes can reduce the energy required to start a react......
