Bhopal – A Nightmare for Union Carbide Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In December 1984, a Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, leaked over forty tons of the poisonous gas methyl isocyanate into the community surrounding the plant. Indian officials estimate that the gas leak left nearly 3000 people dead and 50,000 people permanently disabled and that 15,000 people died subsequently from exposure to the poisonous gas. Union Carbide responded to the disaster by paying survivors inadequate compensation and abandoning the plant, leaving tons of dangerous toxic chemicals strewn around the site and the people of Bhopal with a toxic legacy that is still causing injury today. In this paper the effectiveness of the communication between Union Carbide and its intended publics will be evaluated. For Union Carbide and the Indian government, the Bhopal incident was a public relations nightmare. So how did the company handle the crisis? In the ensuing debate of the Bhopal disaster, three basic issues were highlighted: responsible industrial planning, adequate industrial safety measures, and corporate accountability.
