The Australian gold Rushes of 1850 Australia is what it is today because of it’s varied past. Its history is what shapes this country especially that of the goldfields. Every day life on the gold fields was a daily struggle, not helped that much by the police who just added stress and tension. Due to this continual struggle the Eureka stockade occurred. The 1850s gold rushes changed Australia forever but this change came about in unexpected times and in quite an unusual place. Even though the goldfields offered a lot if successful, just getting through from morning to night took an incredible amount on work. The landscape was dry and dusty with intense heat during the day. People lived in either tents or huts, which were swarming with fleas. Diggers, had to do with what they offered, thus forcing them to drink form the streams and rivers which were full of every day waste products. “There was a spread of many deadly diseases from uncleanliness including apoplexy, dysentery and typhoid fever” (www.sbs.au/gold).
