The Great Gatsby Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

On the surface, The Great Gatsby is a story of the thwarted love between a man and a woman. The main theme of the novel, however, encompasses a much larger, less romantic scope. Through profound, intricate interlinking characters and situations rich with double meanings, The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald shows an era of decayed social and moral values, evidenced in its overarching cynicism, greed, and empty pursuit of pleasure, which encompasses values of its context by revealing elements of the human conditions, establishing a realm of great prosperity, which enables self-reinvention, and within this context deals with a character affected by the society of his time who gradually comes to see the greater understanding of the true meaning of the world he lives in. It depicts a story where the concept of the American Dream, the concept of discovery, individualism, and the pursuit of happiness is pursued and reflected in the ambitions and desires of the characters, particularly Gatsby, a masterpiece of characterisation.
