The peaceful way of life for the local Aboriginals quickly turned into a nightmare of war, dispossession, displacement and massacres. Contact between the locals and the Europeans was disastrous for the Aboriginal people, also bringing diseases such as smallpox, colds, the flu and measles, these were fatal as the indigenous Australians had no resistance to such introduced diseases, so therefore plagued the native populations. The Aboriginal communities immediately hit a massive depopulation. It is possible that disease reduced the Aboriginal population by 90 per cent in the nineteenth century, which stands around 50 000 Aborigines.. There were many massacres and slaughters of Aborigines, with many of them gone unrecorded in Australian History. The only one massacre for which the Europeans were charged, found guilty and punished was The Myall Creek Massacre. Massacres were intended to punish Aborigines for stealing food, killing cattle or attacking the European invaders.
