Society in a War on Drugs Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Our society is currently in a War On Drugs. Obviously plants and chemicals aren't legitimate enemies to humans, so this war is directed at the people who use certain plants and chemicals. This war is being used to rationalize the indifference or scorn and even aggressive harassment and imprisonment our federal government directs at one of the most suffering groups in existence: cancer, multiple-sclerosis, and AIDS patients. On November 29th, 2004, the Supreme Court of the United States of America showed their irrational focus on the War on Drugs when confronted with two patients, Diane Monson and Angel Raich. These women's pain was "scarcely mentioned" in a court session that was supposed to concern medical marijuana's legitimacy and need. The justices instead focused on what impact medicinal use will have on the black market for non-medicinal marijuana. I believe that this focus shows how enemy perceptions, group polarization, and group think are warping our system and these women's pursuit of justice.
