To Kill A Mockingbird
To Kill A Mockingbird a highly acclaimed book, that won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961. Written by Harper Lee, during a highly racially tense time in her home state of Alabama. The subject of To Kill A Mockingbird, namely the injustice of racism and inequality in the American South, was highly relevant at the time of its publication.
Interestingly, the novel is set in The Depression Era of the 1930s. By Harper Lee doing this it provided her readers with a historical insight for currents events of the time, and exposed the deeply rooted history of The Civil Rights struggle in the South. Two very important themes, racism and sexism are thoroughly developed throughout this novel.
The most important theme in the novel is racism. Racial prejudice is present throughout the novel in the people of Maycombs everyday life, as its set in the deep south of America in the 1930s. Slaverys abolishment had occurred not long ago, because this had not been around for long, most peoples attitudes towards Negroes had not changed, despite efforts......
