The Effects on Crime of Prohibition Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Prohibition was the banning of manufacture, sale, transportation, and consumption of Alcohol which was put into affect by the eighteenth amendment. Although congress had nothing but good intentions in mind when passing the eighteenth amendment, it quickly backfired and the negative effects were very apparent. The Volstead Act was passed to enforce the purposes of the eighteenth amendment, but because of lack of enforcement the whole plan backfired. It turned average everyday people into criminals, and actually increases serious crimes due to all the organized crimes such as gangs. Because the lack of enforcement in many regions by the government, alcohol could easily be illegally produced in wooded areas of the United States, or produced outside U.S. Borders and easily smuggled in from Canada, Mexico, or the West Indies. Saloons where alcohol was sold and had legal limitations were closed during prohibition, and speakeasies, or stores (which often required membership cards to enter) that illegally sold alcohol, began to rapidly increases and were often open twenty-......
