It was more than a quarter mile long and over a hundred feet wide. It was built along the bank of the Seine river. Henry IV, who promoted the arts, had many artists and craftsmen live and work on the lower floors. This continued for several hundred years till Napoleon III put an end to it. Louis XIII finished the Denon wing of the Louvre, that was originally started by Catherine Medici.
