The Greenhouse effect Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The greenhouse effect is a natural process which plays an important part in shaping the earth’s climate. Throughout millions of years the greenhouse effect has kept this earth fit for human habitation. Yet since the mid-1800’s the Earth’s temperatures has been noted to have risen. This could have partly been due to the fact that this was the time when modern industry became widespread. Since then humans have had a big contribution to the greenhouse effect in a bad way. The Earth’s atmosphere is highly transparent to short-wavelength energy better know as sunlight. But when the short-wavelength energy is then reflected off the Earth’s surface it is converted to long-wavelength infra-red radiation. The gases in the air then absorb this radiation, thus stopping it from escaping to space, and emit it into the atmosphere in all directions. This is the greenhouse effect, the rise in temperature that the Earth experiences because certain gases in the air absorb energy from the sun. Without these gases, heat would escape back into space this meaning the Earth’s average temperature......
