Selina Darcey from the novel A Patch of Blue, is an innocent girl who was accidentally blinded as a child. She lives a miserable life of negligence and abuse, where she not knowingly finds herself in a constant search for a way out. In this novel, A way out can be defined as a pathway out of the darkness and into the light, where Selina can leave her life of negligence and abuse behind and begin a new life of happiness. She relies on her friends, family and herself to find a way out of the darkness and through the people she relies on, she has many ways out.
After the incident that accidentally blinded Selina, her mother Rose-ann and her grandfather Ole Pa were the two people who played a significant part in the life of Selina as she was growing up. Their assistance to Selina were already opening pathways for Selina out of her life of darkness.
