John Ross: Leader of
the Cherokee Tragedy
Principal chief of the Cherokee Nation John Ross misled his people and gave them false hopes to the point of detriment. In 1833, a group of Cherokee men banded together with the main goal of negotiating a treaty of removal with the U.S. government. These men, among them Major John Ridge, had previously been staunchly opposed to removal, yet they now knew that it had become inevitable. They believed that failure to negotiate favorable terms quickly would certainly spell worsening conditions for the Cherokee nation until they had nothing left to bargain with. Chief John Ross, however, abhorred the idea of negotiating any kind of land-exchange treaty with the U.S. and named the Ridge Party as a group of traitors. Trading Cherokee land with the United States was punishable by death, a law that eventual ended the lives of those responsible for the Treaty of New Echota.
