During the course of the short stories presented in Tim Winton’s novel A Minimum of Two we witness the developments that Jerra Nilsam (the protagonist throughout the majority of the short stories) undergoes emotionally and psychologically. It becomes increasingly apparent as the book progresses that Jerra was noticeably happier (more at peace) during his youth, where he was free of the family and other commitments that he finds himself suddenly bound to following the birth of his son. Jerra’s repeated attempts to discover purpose and meaning to his life often lead him straight into a dead end and it is only when Jerra believes he has a real future will he be able to find inner peace. It becomes evident as the novel unfolds that Jerra is not content with his current predicament and he finds his continual struggle to reach his minimum of two is often obstructed, leading the reader to believe that once he achieves his minimum of two he will be able to get back to the quality of life he previously enjoyed when he lived through a relatively carefree existence.
