The essay is about the history of mankind. Rousseau looks into the question of where the general inequality amongst men cam from. Inequality exists economically, structurally, amongst different generations, genders, races, and in almost all other areas of society. However, Rousseau considers that there are really two categories of inequality the natural and physical. Natural Inequality involves differences between one man's strength or intelligence and that of another - it is the product of nature and the qualities of the mind or of the soul: and another, which may be called moral or political inequaliyu, because it depends on a kind of convention, and is established, or at least authorised by the consent of men. This consists of the privileges one group may have over another, such as the rich over the poor. Rousseau came to the conclusion that the best way to examine the inequality in society is to examine the beginning of mankind itself.
