Socrates argues that a tyrant, though from outward appearance, seems a happy, powerful man, is truly living an unjust, unhappy life, slave to his desires and fearful of his power and the limits of his power. To illustrate his point, Socrates puts his illustrations on a larger scale, a city, in this case a tyrannical city. He asks, First, speaking of the city, would you say a tyrannical city is free or enslaved? It is agreed that it is,
it is enslaved as it is possible to be. (576c). Then, he goes on to question about tyrannical cities as a illustration of a tyrannical man. He states,
Is a tyrannical city rich or poor?
Poor.
Then a tyrannical soul, too, must always be poor and unsatisfiable.
Thats right.
What about fear? Arent a tyrannical city and man full of it?
Absolutely.
