Raymond Gaita condemns the Howard government but thinks It is obvious that politicians must sometimes lie and be in other ways deliberately untruthful, denying people the truth and sometimes deliberately leading them into error (2004:22). Like Walzer (1992) and Machiavelli, he thinks politicians may not lie whenever they think it is necessary for them to acquire or retain power and at critical points moral and political conduct belong to incommensurable realms of value (2004: 23). Tony Abbott thinks the Howard government is moral (2004) but acknowledges problems raised by Kitney who noted the dishonest, ruthless, cool, calculating, guarded nature of Howards government. However Australians will put up with this when they believe an end is justified despite the means (Kitney 2004).
