The role of visual artists in their society was to record important events, scenes, changes in society, people and places.
Visual artists played a very important role in the development of out society in Australia. Without artists we may not have as much knowledge of what life was like and of different events in history as we do today.
Some visual artists not only depict what they saw but they also added twists, so the painting was not exactly what was there in front of them but what they see in their mind as well. Artists such as Sir William Dobell caused a lot of controversy over a portrait that appeared to be characterization. Portrait of an artist Joshua Smith, 1899 was a portrait of Joshua Smith however it was not a realistic representation of him as Dobell also added things that made him seem more like himself. Although it was a portrait it did not really look like him as Dobell added things to the portrait that he knew about Smith as a person. By doing this he successfully depicted not only what he saw on the outside but also what he saw on the inside as well h......
