Ancient Roots: Three Major Periods of the Indians of Mexico Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The connection of the Bering land bridge made it possible for the immigration of people from Asian countries. These ancient immigrants continued their journey south until many of them settled in what is now known as the country of Mexico. There these immigrants evolved over the years in appearance, technology, culture, and became known as the Indians of Mexico. There were three major periods of pre-contact with Meso-American Indians from Mexico. The first major period was known as the pre-classical period in which the Olmecs existed from 12,000 BC to 200 AD. The Olmecs lived between Mexico city and the Yucatan peninsula. They believed in a god named Quetzalcoatl and worshipped him faithfully. The Olmecs contributed various symbols through their religious beliefs that continued and were passed down throughout the years; for example, the symbol of snakes. The next major period is known as the classical period which was a period of rich, cultural production. During this period, the Maya was the dominant group which existed from 200 AD to 900 AD.
