Describe the role of the Crown prosecution service
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) was established in 1986 to prosecute criminal cases investigated and charged by the police in England and Wales in accordance with the provisions of the Prosecution of Offences Act 1985. Until the formation of the CPS the decision to prosecute was largely in the hands of the police, who at that point also conducted the investigation this casuing concerns on the system being haphazard and inconsistent, this being mainly due to each separate police area having its own way of prosecution, therefore there was much contrevesy between people as many people thought that the investigation of crime should be separate from prosecution. As a consequence of the closeness between the investigation aspect and the charging of the cases, it was thought that infringements of civil liberties may occur.
