How do we as the reader see Mumpo change throughout the novel? In this essay I am exploring how the character of Mumpo has changed throughout the novel by William Nicholson. At the start of the novel he is described as ‘the stupidest boy in the school’. Later in the Windsinger he is described by Nicholson as ‘brave’ and happy’. I think Nicholson does this to show how a character can develop throughout a book. I will go into this is detail in the rest of the essay. At the start of the book Nicholson describes Mumpo in such a manor so that you empathise with him and feel sorry for him here is a quote: ‘Mumpo, the stupidest boy in the school.’ Dr. Batch said that in the novel, creating more sympathy for him, as Dr. Batch is the teacher. Mumpo isn’t liked at the start of the book, there is no one who likes and respects him. Here is a quote spoken by Kestrel in the novel: ‘Get away from me, you stink’ this is a typical view of Mumpo by all the characters in the novel at this point of the story. Mumpo really wants to make friend, as he has none. On page......
