Literary Analysis on The Yellow Wallpaper Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“The Yellow Wallpaper”, written in 1892 by Charlotte Gilman, is about a woman who has a nervous disorder. When I read this story, I interpreted a different meaning. I believe it is about women’s rights. At the time the story was written women were demanding equal rights. A line in the play states “… It Becomes Bars! The outside pattern, I mean, and the woman behind it is as plain as can be.”(762). To me, this line stands for women feeling like prisoners because they have on rights. Imagine having no rights that will make anyone feel like a prisoner. The story later says “The woman behind shakes it!” (764). It refers to the bars. Her shaking the bars makes me think that this is a symbol of a woman that no longer wants to live life as a prisoner. The story goes on to say “I think there are a great many women behind, and sometimes only one.”(764). The other women want to join her but are scared of the consequences, When she said “sometimes only one”, the one is the woman who starts the fight for women’s rights. “I think that woman gets out…” (764).
