Abstract:
Three glass tubing apparatuss with rubber stoppers on both ends are used along with Grahams Law, which describes the relative rates at which gases diffuse or effuse, to find the rate at which Hydrogen chloride and ammonia diffuse towards each other. The results are that ammonia diffuses at a rate two times as fast as hydrogen chloride because ammonia has a smaller molecular weight than hydrogen chloride.
Introduction:
Gas laws help to describe the behavior of ideal gas samples under different pressure, volume, and temperature conditions. There are many different gas laws, such as Boyles Law, Charless Law, and Grahams Law. In this experiment, Grahams Law is used.
Thomas Graham, who was a Scottish chemist, came up with concept of Grahams Law in the nineteenth century. Grahams law describes the rate at which an ideal gas will diffuse or effuse.
