When the boys crashed on the island, they only had feelings of hope and optimism. As the thirst for power increased so did the savageness of the children on the island. The boys were separated more and more as the tribes views differed further. The tone of The Lord of The Flies went from hope to pure chaos and evil.
As they woke up, they were separated. Then Ralph found the first source of power and leadership. He used the conch to call the first meeting and set the rules that you couldnt talk without the conch in your hand. The story says, And another thing. We cant have everybody talking at once. Well have to have Hands up like at school. He held the conch before his face and glanced round the mouth. Then Ill give him the conch. The conch represented leadership and gave the person holding it a voice. The conch is what kept a tone of order and civilization at the very beginning of the novel.
