Astra Peterson is a fourteen year old, high sprung girl. She likes adventure and is very outgoing. Unlike his twin sister, Hugo likes to keep to himself and read every book he can get his hands on. On the Petersons long journey escaping their well beloved home Latvia, Astras best friend, Mara Jansons and her family, travel along. Mara is superstitious in many aspects, but at the same time practical.
This story starts out with the Petersons and the Jansons having to leave Latvia, during World War II in 1944, because of the Russians who were on the verge of attacking. They become refugees on their way to Germany. Going from camp to camp under strict Nazi orders, they try to reach Herr Lukas Petersons friend, Professor Zimmermann, to lodge with him for the time being. On their first train going from Riga, Latvia, to Liepaja, Latvia, Hugo became overpowered in the large crowd.
