Thomas Merton
Thomas Merton and Dorothy Day are leaders in the Catholic movement and there lives began with the Lord not in their exact mind frame at first. Thomas Merton was born on January 31, 1915 in Prades, France to father Owen Merton and mother Ruth Jenkins. Owen Merton was a New Zealand descendant who had a real logical form of intelligence. Owen had been an artist and had gotten most of his inspiration from France where he had taken painting classes and met his future wife Ruth. Ruth Jenkins was of American descent and had the same enthusiasm for art. Ruth was very uptight and precise. She died of cancer when Thomas was at the mere age of six. Thomas did not recall much about his mother but that she must have consisted of insatiable dreams and the ambition of perfection. Thomas then spent much time with his father who took him on his travels throughout the years. Then Thomas wanted to attend school so his father sent him to Oakham School in England.
